Martin Fröst (clarinet) & Roland Pöntinen (piano)

The repertoire for clarinet and piano may not be particularly extensive, but it includes several sublime works. In this concert, a selection of these pieces will be performed by one of today’s most prominent clarinetists, Swedish Martin Fröst, accompanied by the versatile Finnish/Swedish pianist Roland Pöntinen.

The clarinet sonata truly found its form with Johannes Brahms’ two sonatas, written three years before his death at a time when he had essentially retired from composing. We can be grateful for this today, as Brahms’ two clarinet sonatas are considered masterpieces of the instrument’s repertoire.

The French composer Camille Saint-Saëns wrote three sonatas for wind instruments, believing they were underrepresented as prominent solo voices. Among these is an elegant clarinet sonata, which has since become part of the standard repertoire for this ensemble.

Another French composer, Francis Poulenc, wrote a clarinet sonata shortly before his death in 1963, in his characteristic style that blends diverse musical idioms.

Ernest Chausson, in his Andante and Allegro for clarinet and piano, explored the expressive and technical possibilities of the wind instrument in dialogue with the piano.

In contrast, Alban Berg’s Four Pieces, Op. 5 explores entirely different expressive dimensions, dissolving traditional notions of tonality and musical temporality.
