Although Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas—written over nearly 30 years—were not conceived as a unified cycle, they nevertheless form an extraordinary monument, not only in piano literature but in classical music. The 32 piano sonatas are often referred to as the "New Testament" of piano literature, with the "Old Testament" being J.S. Bach's Das Wohltemperierte Klavier.

Performing all 32 sonatas is a monumental challenge, even for the most accomplished pianist. This season, tonight’s soloist, the exceptionally talented young German pianist Fabian Müller, will perform all the sonatas in a concert series at the Boulez Saal in Berlin, initiated by the legendary pianist Daniel Barenboim.

In this concert, Müller will play three of Beethoven's piano sonatas that illustrate the composer's development: two from the so-called early period and one from the late period.

The two early sonatas still clearly reflect the influence of Mozart and Haydn, yet they bear the distinctive imprint of the young, ambitious composer.

The late piano sonata, Opus 106, known as the Hammerklavier Sonata, is one of the composer’s most monumental piano works and one of the most technically demanding—not only among Beethoven’s compositions but in the entire piano repertoire. This mighty work was written during a phase in Beethoven's life when he was becoming acutely aware of his own mortality, a realization intensified by his increasing deafness.
